practical water safety that goes beyond a swimming certificate
You end up in the water unexpectedly. What do you do-and what if you see a classmate getting into trouble? In a watery country like the Netherlands, swimming skills are essential. But even with a swimming certificate, situations can arise where knowledge of water safety and rescue techniques makes all the difference.
That is why Alkmaar Sport, in cooperation with Variopool, offers the programme Save your Friend: a hands-on training programme for pupils in groups 5 to 8. The programme is part of Swim is cool, a playful and complete exercise programme with which schools discover how versatile and educational exercise in the water can be.
Four sections: from bike in water to rescue without jumping yourself
Save Your Friend focuses on teaching various survival techniques, including wet and dry rescues. The aim: to make children aware of risks around water and teach them how to act safely and effectively when things go wrong.
The training consists of four sections of about 20 minutes, which take place in the 25-metre pool and/or 50-metre pool. The themes tie in with recognisable situations:
-How do you rescue your boyfriend from the water without having to jump yourself?
-What do you do if you fall into the water with your bike, or out/from a boat?
-What do you do if you or your boyfriend falls through the ice?
-How do you dive someone and apply transport grabs?
Learning in a safe, playful way - with lasting value
The skills learned are invaluable. Children practice under the guidance of expert instructors and learn to deal with emergency situations in a fun and playful way. Save Your Friend is thus a valuable addition to regular swimming education.
